1) Notices that a song called “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor is #1 video on iTunes
2) Assumes it’s EDM
3) Watches the video on YouTube after a EDM related adroll
4) Realize it’s a sugary 60’s themed female empowerment song about body image sung by a girl who “ain’t no size two”
5) Sees a crew of black dancers popping their butt and doing body rolls *eyeroll*
6) Hears a blonde white girl a say, “I’m bringing booty back / Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that” *eyeroll*
7) Sees the “token white back up dancer” that will be mentioned in the future to thwart the inevitable claims of racism *eyeroll*
8) Sees a skinny white girl grab a thick black girls butt *eye roll*
9) *series of eyerolls*
OVERALL THOUGHTS: I initially wished female musicians learned from Lily Allen, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry’s shortcomings and stopped using black people as props and stopped disrespecting black women’s bodies for fun. Then I realized that the racial undertones are intentional in a feeble attempt to gain hype at the expense of black people. Right now, the 6 millions views it has gained in 1 month are from teenage girls who play Kardashian Hollywood but crave a positive message that makes them feel good about themselves. This song gives white girls who are larger than a size 10 a “Baby Got Back” of their own to sing in karaoke bars but the video makes it clear that this message isn’t made for all girls. Thankfully success brings critics and critics will uncover the lightly masked flaws. Hopefully teenagers will realize that this video isn’t hunky dory and putting yourself up doesn’t mean you need to objectify another group of people in the process. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7PCkvCPvDXk
